Have you ever heard yourself saying “I have nothing to wear” wile staring at a closet full of clothes, most of which you have bought in the last couple of months, I know I definitely have. I embarked on an internet journey intent on finding a way to clean out my closet in a way that would get rid of the old items and make it easier and less stressful for me to find something to wear in the morning. With some help from The Every Girl, Into Mind and Un-Fancy I found something called a Capsule wardrobe. Haven’t heard of one? It is basically a mini collection of clothes that you LOVE to wear that all go together and are very versatile.

Here is how I cleaned out my closet and formed a collection of clothing that I am looking forward to wearing during the upcoming spring season.

Step 1: Take EVERYTHING out of your closet

And yes, I mean everything. This is so you can start with a clean slate. Sometimes the only thing you really need to do is re-organize. Once you take everything out you can see past the clutter and really discover if the way your closet is organized is the right way for you and your stuff.

Step 2: Sort

This is the hard part; deciding what stays and what goes. The way that I did it was putting the pieces that I absolutely LOVED in one pile and everything else in another. I only included tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, purses and shoes (I did not include workout gear, pajamas, underwear, accessories, jewelry or swimsuits).

Step 3: Analyze

Although this seems like a hard step, it is actually the easiest. Once you have all your “to die for” pieces in one spot, your personal style should be really apparent. Look for patterns- a certain color, fabric, pattern or brand- to help you decide what else to keep in the next step.

Step 4: Sort again

Once all of your favorite pieces are tucked back into your closet, go through the big mess of clothes that have probably ended up on your bedroom floor. Sort these pieces into these piles…

  • Love it!- These are the pieces that you absolutely cannot live without and have an exact idea of when/what to wear them with. Place these items in your closet
  • MAYBE- The color kind of off? The fit not quite right? This is where those “kind of” clothes go. What I did with these is placed them in a box under my bed. If you don’t wear any of them by the end of the season- GET RID OF THEM. Odds are, you probably won’t miss them…
  • NOPE- Pretty self explanatory; Donate them to charity, swap with a friend or sell them to make money for next season’s purchases.
  • WRONG SEASON: Have a GREAT winter coat, but it’s July? Or an amazing sundress, but its February and -20 degrees outside? Store these under your bed or in a corner of your closet to come back to when the season is right.

BONUS POINTS: Sort the maybe pile and season pile into the different seasons to make Step 7 a little easier.

Step 5: Assess

Now that you have gone through all of your clothes, assess what you have. Do you have enough pieces to sustain you through the season? Depending on what you had to start with, you may need to go on a quick shopping run- but remember, only buy what you need. Make a list of the characteristics of the clothes you have in your closet (step 3) to be sure what you buy will go with them.

Step 6: Wear your capsule wardrobe!

Now comes the fun part- actually wearing the clothing!!! Wear these clothes for the entirety of the season. Have fun accessorizing (in unlimited ways) and styling the clothes to make them appropriate for the season. I went for an approximately 3 month time span, but you can change that to whatever time is realistic for you.

Step 7: Onto the next one

2 weeks before the end of the season, start the process all over again, but focusing on pieces for the next season. Before you know it, your closet will be full of pieces you love, making it less stressful and much easier to get ready in the morning.

Have fun organizing…

xoxo Gabriela
