Why I love to travel alone- and why you should too!

Whenever I am planning a trip, I have a huge spike in my anxiety. I can never quite pin point what part of traveling that causes me the most trouble, it seems to be everything. Flights, packing, money, home sickness- only some of the things that make traveling super complicated. And the problem is that I love experiencing new places and seeing new things.

So, in September, I decided to plan a trip to Orlando, Florida. I was so excited to go; I was going to celebrate 19 years later (it’s a Harry Potter thing), but then I realized something…

I was going to be traveling alone.

And I was terrified.

I was scared that I wouldn’t have what I needed. I was scared I wouldn’t know how to get transport to the airport, how to check into a hotel, how to do all of the things that I usually left to my mother (thanks mom).

But once I got past all of that I loved traveling by myself. I had the freedom to go where I wanted to and have the timetable I wanted. I didn’t have to worry about whether the people I was traveling with were having fun or if I should be doing something else to improve their experience.

The only person I needed to make happy was myself. And the only person who knew how to do that was me.

Focusing on myself has always been hard for me. The days that I really needed to focus on my mental health I couldn’t. I was always looking around me and worrying about whether I was being a burden to the people surrounding me. This trip gave me some much needed me time. A break from worrying about other people- and just worrying about myself.

I want to make a personal trip an annual thing for me. It was so helpful in giving me a break and helped a lot with lessening my travel anxiety. It showed me that although my brain was telling me I couldn’t do this alone, I could. And it was AWESOME!
