Last nights Grammy’s marked a huge milestone in both music and fashion. People broke out of the simple floor length ball gown trend that has been going on for a while now on the red carpet. People took daring risks and some even played it safe, but read on to see who rocked their look and who, well, fell flat.

Let’s start off with talking about Rihanna. Let me be frank with this one. It looked like a 10 year olds  birtday dress. The fabric was too shimmery, the dark detailing around the bust looked like it was hot glued on, and the ruffles were too close together. Don’t get me wrong, Rihanna is gorgeous, but the poofy double skirt does not do well for her figure. In my opinion, the problem with the dress is that it goes up too high. If the ruffled bottom ended at the waist, or even a little above or below, it would have looked a million times better. The color does look good with her dark skin, pink was a popular color on the carpet this year, and keeping her hair up makes it look a little cleaner. Her  earrings worked with her skin tone and face shape and she was yet another person to follow the natural makeup trend. This was a Giambattista Valli dress who is an italian designer known for his unique pieces and I must say, it is an exquisite piece of fashion. The piece was so heavy, Ri was caught pulling it up on multiple occasions which is a huge fashion faux-pas. The goal was to get attention, and that was achieved, but I think the dress took away from Rihanna’s beauty and made her figure look a little more, for lack of a better word, fluffy.

The next trend I am going to examine is the open down the middle trend. I am not even going to start on Kim Kardashian’s revealing dress (the fabric was gorgeous, the detailing was gorgeous, the low cut front was gorgeous, the slit came up way too high and lastly her hair looked like she just rolled out of bed and went to the award show). Gina Rodriguez wore a gorgeous Christos Costarellos dress with a zipper down the front with teal detailing. The green stitching along the front added a pop of color that made the dress look more couture and less plain. They exposed just the right amount of skin with the zippers and the fabric fell in the back gorgeously. The teal lace around the waist was a little different from the color of the stitching, and wether that was done on purpose or not, I don’t think it worked because she does not have that small of a waist. Overall, I think this dress was simply incredible.

The stars dazzled in all shades of white, but bright white was worn the most this year on the carpet. Jennifer Hudson looked amazing in this strapless short Tom Ford dress. Although it is simple, I think this is the perfect choice for her so she could show off her new and improved body. She seemed so confident and I give her so much credit for wearing this. The strappy sandals matched the double choker necklace which I think was smart to keep everything minimal. I do not like that the necklace was a choker because she could have done something longer or bigger to add something worth talking about to the whole outfit. The purple lips did add a little pop of color, that without I think people would have criticized the simplicity of the outfit more.

Although some people took risks with different colors and fabrics, others played it safe and stuck to what they knew: solid colors. Shockingly, Miley Cyrus was one of those people. When I heard she was walking on next, I immediately ran to my computer to get ready to comment on it, but when she came out I actually liked it. She wore a black Alexandre Vauthier dress with slits along the side. Similar to the other ones, this dress was also low cut. The pop of color was added by her simple, short red nails. Another thing that was simple about this look was her makeup. I would have liked to see her experiment with a smoky eye or a bold lip color just to counteract the simplicity of the rest of the look. At the same time, I like the statement this outfit made, that she can be classy if she tries.

Saving the best for last, Taylor Swift had so much “Style” in this gorgeous teal Ellie Saab gown. The fabric was stunning and I lobe how the color has sort of an ombre effect when it gets closer to her waist. She was one of the most colorful stars of the night pairing the teal dress with pink-purple suede Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. Choosing a suede shoe over a patent leather one keeps the outfit from looking too shiny. They carried the green up to her ears with lime green earrings that added another dimension to the dress. I love that there are cutouts on the shoulder and how it is short and long at the same time. Having it short in the front showed off her defined legs (major shape points right there). This look was both elegant and fun and Taylor definitely rocked it.

Major Trends this year: Cutouts, Bright White, Open down the middle, Baby Pink, and (as always) Black.
