As long as you are breathing, and you don’t live under a rock, you have heard something about the collaboration between fashion powerhouse Balmain and bargain shop H&M, and. Modeled by Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, the collection was talked about months before the release date.
As was predicted, the collection sold out online and in stores within minutes, and now is being sold on eBay for up to 6 times its retail cost! Is it worth paying all that money for something that might go out of style in a couple of years? Let us find out…
Headed by Olivier Rousteing, Balmain has grown in both style and size since he joined the french fashion house. Since his arrival at Balmain, they opened a store in London and are scheduling a New York opening, which would make a total of 2 stand alone stores. With the help of some of his celebrity friends, the brand surpassed the 1 million follower mark on Instagram, making it the first french label to do so. Adding to his repertoire, he created this collection in collaboration with H&M, in order to open up his clientele and allow some more of his fans to buy some of his pieces.
With a vibrant color palette of hot pinks, forest greens, and mustards, this collection is not for the faint hearted. Following their signature Balmain look, blacks and whites were used to contrast these sharp colors. The fabrics were of the highest quality, definitely something you wouldn’t normally find at H&M. Silk was used in place of cotton or polyester and high quality leather was used, when they could have easily used faux. They did not just slap their name on the clothing, they actually created something worthy of the Balmain name.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on some of the pieces and I am amazed at what I see. They are all statement pieces, perfect for a true fashionista. This maroon fur coat has to be my favorite with the beaded silk blouse coming in a close second.The cream blazer with the gold buttons and shoulder pads was one of the most sought after pieces in the collection and once I picked it up I knew why. The quality was amazing, and it fit me perfectly, not to mention it is almost identical to a Balmain piece that sold for over $2,500.
They had a good mix of affordable and expensive pieces there, but all in all the quality was out of this world! If these pieces were sold at the actual balmain store, with just the balmain name on it, they would fit in perfectly. I see no difference between these and genuine balmain pieces, which is why this collection was such a success. In my opinion, if you have the chance to get your hands on any of these pieces, I would go for it!
