I have wanted to go to NYFW since I was a little girl, and watching it on TV is basically the same thing as being there, isn’t it? You’re right, it isn’t, but it’s pretty close. Today, Baring It All: Inside NYFW premiered on abc family, which was a two hour special giving you an inside look into New York Fashion Week. It featured todays top designers (Jeremy Scott, Diane Von Furstenburg), up and coming models (Lameka Foxx) and seasoned bloggers (Shea Marie). I had been looking forward to this show for a while, so I set aside some time in my day to watch it and was blown away…

The show opened on the days before fashion week by introducing the main people they were going to follow. I thought it was super interesting to hear everyone’s backstories, especially Jeremy Scott’s. I personally find him so inspirational, and seeing the old photos that he posted when he was just starting his career gave me a newfound respect for him. I can only hope that one day I can find the same amount of confidence that he has. I love the way that Shea talked about fashion week, about how it is changing and becoming more of a social phenomenon and less of a trade secret. It gives me some hope that maybe some day, I can be sitting there in the middle of the “beautiful chaos”.

Throughout the whole special, almost everyone talked about how bloggers are changing the way fashion week, and fashion in general, is run. Instead of just magazine editors sitting in the front row of shows, now it’s bloggers who may or may not even have a fashion background. The biggest goal of designers now is to create enough buzz that bloggers will talk about their show, and without them, the designers become nothing. Katherine Schwarzenegger explained the whole reason why the blogging industry is beloved, because bloggers give a real and relatable perspective on fashion week. They expand the bubble of people involved in fashion week, because now anyone can see looks the second they step onto the runway. I mean, I still feel that fashion week is super intimidating and secluded, but now that bloggers are invited in with open arms, it shows how the atmosphere is slowly changing.

I honestly could not believe that Ken Downing had time to do this documentary because he is a fashion GOD. Yes Ken, I know you do not believe that you are a God, but you are 🙂 I totally agreed with him when he said that with fashion, you should stick to your gut. I really think that style is something instinctual, and you can’t really learn it, per say. You can follow others, but in order to be a trend setter like him, or like any of the people in this show, you really have to have a gut feeling about fashion. My favorite quote from the show is from him: “Fashion is a dream, when you take away the dream, it is only clothes”. I really captures what fashion is, clothing is just clothing, fashion is created when you add a story to it.

They also introduced Lameka Foxx, a new up and coming model who was discovered by IMG models when she posted a picture on Instagram. Her story is what everyone hopes will happen, but to be honest, I kind of found her to be a little spoiled and naive. Now, don’t get me wrong, she is very talented in what she is doing, but I just thought her attitude wasn’t the best.

The only complaint that I have about this show is the people that they chose to follow. I’m talking about Katherine Schwarzenegger, and Caroline Vreeland. It was interesting to see their perspective, but it just bothered me that they came from famous backgrounds. I know that fashion is all about connections and the people that you know, but I think they would have reached more of an audience if they had picked a different blogger community.

But despite that, I think this show is a must see for anyone either currently in the industry, or dreaming of being part of it. Also, I think it was good to show that fashion is a real career; it really showed all the dedication, heart and work that was put into creating and attending the shows. I didn’t think this could even be possible, but it made my determination and love for fashion grow so much larger.

What did you guys think of it?

xoxo Gabriela
