Italian Fashion Magazines: A return to perspective

Italians are no strangers to fashion. On the contrary, they are one of the most well dressed cultures in the world. Italians cherish outward appearances way more than us Americans do, believe it or not. It isn’t that they are better dressed than  americans, but the fact that they are well dressed all the time and have a careless, confident attitude amongst them. From the early hours in the morning to very late at night, everyone looks like they stepped right out of Vogue.

Speaking of fashion magazines (see that transition ;)), something that I thought was interesting was the amount of magazines they had dedicated to fashion and style. It seemed like they had hundreds upon hundreds, and that was just in the small beachfront stores. They also had magazines that we all know and love, Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bizarre, but from other countries that aren’t easily accessible in the US.

Flipping through these magazines took my breath away. They were like a work of art. Yea, there was the occasional advertisement or two, but it seemed like the whole thing was teeming with fashion genius. They just seemed like real fashion magazines, not a 200 page advertisement book. And the clothing, accessories and makeup that they displayed were current high end brands and trends.

Something that i think our magazines are lacking is the whole prestige factor. People want to look through magazines to see what is unattainable to them, not what they can go and buy themselves. Having these magazines was a way for the normal people to see the beauty in these luxury brands, without going bankrupt by buying one of them. I think that the fashion magazine industry here in the US has lost sight of why they are there in the first place, to show people a life of sophistication and style.

Thanks for letting me rant! Talk to you tomorrow…
xoxo Gabriela
